چکیده

We briefly consider some design aspects of aperture arrays for use in radio astronomy, particularly contrasting the performance of dense and sparse aperture arrays. Recent insights have emerged in the final design phase of LOFAR which suggest that sparse aperture arrays have the best prospects for cost-effective performance at radio frequencies below about 500 MHz; exceeding those of both dense aperture arrays and parabolic reflectors by an order of magnitude. Very attractive performance, of 10,000 – 20,000 m/K, can be achieved with a sparse design that covers the 70 – 700 MHz range with two antenna systems that share receiver resources. Cost-effective systems of this type represent only a modest increment in system complexity over that being deployed in LOFAR and are achievable with today’s technology.

Design of an Aperture Phased Array System for the SKA

Aperture phased arrays operating up to 1 GHz are highly flexible collector systems, uniquely capable of performing an HI survey of a billion galaxies and observations of the Epoch of Reionisation, two of the Key Science Programmes for the Square Kilometer Array, SKA. Such high performance arrays are only becoming feasible in the timescales of the SKA due to technological advances in array desig...

A Wideband, Four-Element, All-Digital Beamforming System for Dense Aperture Arrays in Radio Astronomy

Densely-packed, all-digital aperture arrays form a key area of technology development required for the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) radio telescope. The design of real-time signal processing systems for digital aperture arrays is currently a central challenge in pathfinder projects worldwide. We describe an hierarchical, frequency-domain beamforming architecture for synthesising a sky beam from...

Pulsar searches and timing with the SKA

The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) is a planned multi purpose radio telescope with a collecting area approaching 1 million square metres. One of the key science objectives of the SKA is to provide exquisite strongfield tests of gravitational physics by finding and timing pulsars in extreme binary systems such as a pulsar-black hole binary. To find out how three preliminary SKA configurations will...

A Digital Broadband Beamforming Architecture for 2-PAD

Abstract. We describe an hierarchical, frequency-domain beamforming architecture for synthesising a sky beam from the wideband antenna feeds of digital aperture arrays. The development of densely-packed, all-digital aperture arrays is an important area of research required for the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) radio telescope. The design of real-time signal processing systems for digital apertur...

System Noise Analysis of an Ultra Wide Band Aperture Array Element for Low Frequency Radio Astronomy

One of the biggest challenges in radio astronomy for the 21st century is the SKA telescope, the newest radio telescope in the world to be built as a Square Kilometre Array of antennas distributed in hundreds of stations to form an interferometric image of the sky. Below 1 GHz, these stations will be composed of thousands of inexpensive elements in a dense or sparse configuration delivering data...
